Sarah Jane Morris: Longing To Be Free
“A voice that can excite shivers of passion and delight. Soaring, swooping, sensual and sophisticated, this voice is more than a style, it’s a force of nature…Torch song, soul standard or smoky blues, the message remains constant: human passion with a dazzling voice.” – Neil Spencer, The Observer
One of Britain’s most influential jazz and R&B singers, Sarah Jane Morris, comes to the Coronet to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Longing To Be Free is an evening in which Sarah Jane and her band, in their inimitable style, honour women and their contribution to the history of song – female artists past and present who have inspired her own musical journey.
Earlier this year Sarah Jane released her album The Sisterhood, a tribute to iconic women singers and songwriters, including Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox and Kate Bush who have influenced the development of the popular song. Together with co-writer/co-producer Tony Rémy, who will perform with her at The Coronet, they have crafted songs which tell each singer-songwriter’s story while simultaneously capturing their musical and lyrical essence.
This intimate concert, in the informal glory of The Coronet Theatre, will range from the upbeat to the soulful, featuring, amongst others, songs from this remarkable album and a preview of The Sisterhood Volume 2.
