L'amore Del Cuore (Heart's Desire)
(This is a past event and is no longer running)
By Caryl Churchill
Directed by Lisa Ferlazzo Natoli
Company lacasadargilla
Presented in Italian with English surtitles.
A hilarious and touching Italian adaptation of one of Caryl Churchill’s most revolutionary plays.
“It is both one of the funniest short plays ever written and a reminder of the savagery that often lies beneath the surface of family life.” (Michael Billington).
As a family anxiously awaits their daughter’s return from Australia, Churchill’s play races through a series of scenarios, repetitions and experiments, illuminating the curious and complex ways in which families communicate.
Caryl Churchill has influenced generations of writers. One of Europe’s greatest playwrights, she puts experimentation with verbal communication at the heart of her work. From Top Girls to Serious Money and Escaped Alone, her works have continuously inspired theatre companies across the globe.
This adaptation, from acclaimed Italian theatre maker Lisa Ferlazzo Natoli and company lacasadargilla, employs movement, the Italian tradition of Commedia del’Arte, and Churchill’s text to push the limits of language. “Amazing. A work of infinite and fascinating restarts, rewinds and still images” – Rodolfo Di Giammarco.
We will be hosting a post-show talk with professor Paola Bono, Italy’s leading expert curator of Caryl Churchill’s works and Alessandro Iachino theatre critic, on the 15th of June.
