In a world where the unimaginable becomes the norm, where what was inconceivable becomes suddenly part of our life, from pandemic to climate disasters and even nuclear annihilation, fiction becomes an essential tool to imagine alternative worlds and reveal underlying tensions across our societies.

Two ambitious writers will discuss what it means to imagine the end of times and what it means to write about it. Their works help us find “meaning” through hybrid forms of writing, mixing history with personal stories.

Paolo Giordano studied physics at the University of Turin and holds a PhD in theoretical particle physics. The Solitude of Prime Numbers (2008), his first novel, won the Premio Strega, has sold over a million copies and was translated into thirty languages.

Luke Williams is a lecturer, teaching prose fiction and creative-critical work across all Birkbeck’s Creative Writing programmes. Luke is a graduate of the MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, where he met Natasha Soobramanien, with whom he now co-writes. Their collaboration began with Luke’s first novel The Echo Chamber (the novel won the 2011 Saltire Award for Best First Book) and continued with Diego Garcia (Goldsmith Prize 2022).

Marco Magini is one of the co-founders of FILL, a writer and an entrepreneur.
